Captain America On Track To Score With Moviegoers

By Mark Lorenz on July 22nd, 2011

America loves Captain America. On a sidenote – why was this movie not released on July 4th, for the most massive marketing blitz in history?

Captain America is the story of the leader of Marvel’s Avengers crew – starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Dominic Cooper. And because of a great marketing campaign, what looks to be a different milieu than most superhero movies, and good reviews – it managed to score 4 million dollars in midnight showings. That puts it above Thor and the Green Lantern, and though it’ll have strong competition in the form of Harry Potter, I think it’ll come out on top.

No. Wait. Nothing can crush Harry Potter. Harry Potter will steamroll every movie this year, but Captain America is on pace to earn 60 million dollars or more this weekend, with acclaimed performances by Chris Evans et al.

Personally, I think it’s weird that there are a group of actors in Hollywood that are double-booked as superheroes. Namely, Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans. Which should tell you about how many over six foot, built-like-a-superhero men there are wandering around the streets of LA. Precisely two.

Captain America is in theaters this weekend.
