Now we’ll have to tune into something other than the NBA to see a 7’6” Chinese dude amble around and toss balls away from his opponents.
I’m kidding. There’ll never be another day where we can look on a 7’6” Chinese guy and think that it’s a normal thing – as Yao Ming has announced that he’s going into retirement. The big man from China, one of the most popular NBA stars in the world, whose seasons were kinda plagued with injuries the way that Egypt was kinda plagued with their firstborns being slaughtered is only 30 years old, yet has announced the fact that he’s going to pack it up for good and do whatever else it is that he wants to do for the rest of his life, with his piles of money. The reason Yao’s hanging up his gigantic sneakers? He’s had over five surgeries on his ankles. Which struggled to support him the way you’d struggle to support 300 pounds being tenuously stretched over inches of bone.
Time will tell whether or not Yao is put into the Hall of Fame – when he was healthy, he was a dominant player, but from about 2005-2011, his body was reacting the way any type of structure would if it were built far too tall.
We’re sad to see you go.
