Captain America Losing “America” in Foreign Title?

By James Sheldon on July 6th, 2011

A little disappointed in Paramount and Marvel. Is he Captain America, or Captain Sellout?

Clearly concerned about milking this cash cow for all it’s worth, the studio has offered the option to foreign markets to change the title of Captain America: The First Avenger, to simple The First Avenger. Because America is so hated in the rest of the world and all…

It seems as if most countries that will even allow this film to be shown within their borders, are completely cool with the first avenger actually being from America. After all, the movie is about Captain America.

So, this is yet another layer of asininity in contemporary, we-snipped-our-balls-off, American culture; however, I was slightly shocked, though not at all surprised to see the nations which will lose “America” in the title:

Russia. Ukraine. South Korea. Three… …allies…?

Not at all surprised. I love Russian people, and many of them I pity. I would love to sit in a Russian classroom for a series of lectures on WWII. Guess what they teach about the American involvement in WWII? Wait–America fought in WWII?

Chatting with a dancer friend from Russia, I asked about some of the Russian greats–got to Mikhail Baryshnikov, who defected in the 80s–she had never heard of him. Perhaps the greatest technical dancer in the history of the world…never…heard of him. Like I said. A lot of pity for a great people pressed under a forceful thumb.

Ukraine. Really, Marvel? You gave them an option in the Ukraine? What will the movie pull there? $50,000 USD?

South Korea. Always thankful for continued support. Yeah. I get it. We’ve had troops there for too long, etc. Lots of anti-American sentiment.

And the beat goes on.

I just hope Captain America has more brass than the studio that produced him.
