No amount of hyperbole can express the degree of disgusting food intake we have witnessed here today.
Every year in the tradition of true patriots, people scarf all kinds of comestibles into their mouth-holes for the sake of a tenuous title. And every year, it is much more compelling to witness on television than in person. If you wanted, you could’ve trekked out to Brooklyn’s Coney Island, you could’ve sit in the crowd of people cheering absent shirts and covered in American flags – or you could’ve sat in the comfort of your homes and did like my family did – wonder repeatedly and out loud, ‘WHAT ARE WE WATCHING?’
And watch we did, as Joey Chesnut consumed 62 dogs and took the contest hands down. But in an odd development, on an isolated rooftop in Manhattan, Takeru Kobayashi allegedly broke the world record, consuming 69 hotdogs in ten minutes. Kobayashi was arrested last year at the contest for rushing the stage after it was finished – the result of a dispute with International Competitive Eating barring him from competing in outside contests.
On the women’s side, Sonya ‘The Black Widow’ Thomas finished with 40 hot dogs eaten.
She’s 100 pounds. Gentlemen, start your engines. And happy 4th.
