Diana at 50: What was Newsweek Thinking?

By James Sheldon on June 30th, 2011

Seriously. I get it. I get that Diana still sells. The Royal Wedding, the hoopla, the pomp and circumstance…it had more than a few us asking: I wonder what Diana would think of all of this?

I understand the rhetoric, but I cannot quite wrap my mind around Newsweek’s decision to “age” a fantasy version of a living Diana, and imagine her life if she were living today. At 50. The content, sure. The photos? C’mon.

If I can toss a couple toward the Newsweek Photoshop geniuses: You don’t think Diana would have had a bit of work done? What’s up with the unflattering wrinkles?

When the idea was pitched, I’m sure the editorial staff believed it to be a fascinating pitch–a great idea–to fictionalize the life of Diana, enjoying time with her sons and her beautiful new daughter in law. Yet whose idea was it to superimpose a 50 year old figment of an imagination on the cover of Newsweek?

Add to it the fact that they’ve placed her in action–walking with Kate Montbatten-Windsor (that is her last name, now, btw), who is looking to her non-existent mother-in-law with great admiration, as Diana struts forward…with a smile that just would make even the most macabre individual shudder.

Odd. Creepy. Devoid of taste. These are just a few thoughts that come to mind. I’m curious: Am I alone in this? Are you all vibing this, or is this just a few steps over the line?

Way to take it the National Enquirer route, Newsweek–I didn’t know you had it in ya.
