Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme and National Donut Day

By James Sheldon on June 3rd, 2011

The day after we tossed you a little love about nutrition and the USDA introduction of the PLATE, it’s time to get back to our roots…offering debatable food options. Sure, donuts make your insides function like glue and your midsection take on the appearance of the Michelin Man, but they’re good for the soul–they’re good for morale.

Today is National Donut Day. The biggies are tossing incentives at the public, and there’s a chance that your local donut bakers may be jumping on the train to compete with the biggies–it’s always fun to ask–and by ask I mean persuade in a manipulative manner.

The sweet: Dunkin’ Donuts is offering a free donut with any drink purchase. The sweeter: Krispy Kreme is just giving a donut to everyone. It sounds as if one company is doing a little better on the NYSE.

Donuts are great for breakfast, but I’m of the mind that they’re even better for lunch, or an afternoon snack. They leave less of a “kick to the gut,” feeling and that desire to go back to bed.

My favorite donut joint in L.A. is actually a little place on Magnolia in Burbank called the Donut Hut. I’m going to say it’s highly unlikely that they’ve got anything going down, but how you gonna know unless you ask?

Whether you spell it donut or doughnut, or even if you think they’re do-nots, you can’t avoid the power of National Donut Day. It’s the one day you can really feel like an officer of the law…because you scored free donuts.
