Dirk Nowitzki: Greatest German Ever?

By James Sheldon on May 18th, 2011

Sweet mercy.

The stat we’re all thinking about: 24-24 from the line? That is completely and totally riDirkulous.

I’m pulling for Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals, but how could any basketball fan not admire what the 7′ German did in Game 1?

Dirk went 24-24 from the charity stripe, and 12-15 from the field, putting in 48, setting an NBA playoff record for most consecutive free throws made in a game. This conference final is certainly shaping up to be a dandy, considering that Kevin Durant put in 40 for OKC in the loss.

No doubt, the basketball is going to be great in this series, but that’s not what this post is about. This ain’t no ESPN.com… We need to rap about the German’s personal life and international social influence.

Remember a couple of years ago when Dirk was having all that lady drama with an older gal who had a very colorful past–he was apparently in love with her–but she was arrested due to multiple legal infractions? He couldn’t get her to chat freely about her past, so he hired a private detective to look into it for him, and he found out more than he wanted. Then after she was arrested, because of Dirk, he found out she was pregnant? Remember that? I thought that was the END of Dirk Nowitzki as we knew him in the NBA. That’s the kind of crap that can ruin a guy.

Nope. True to form, the dude is runnin’ like Franka Potente in Run Lola Run. I think he may just be the greatest German to have ever lived. I’m wrestling against the awesomeness of David Hasselhoff and the sweetness of Diane Kruger and Heidi Klum, but if you smashed the three of them together, I still think they’d only be 6′9″, and lack the versatility of Dirk.

Seriously, if you think about a bridge across the ages, this guy is having music written for him and about by the great German composers: Mozart, Bach, Beethoven… …Hans Zimmer (how awesome was the Inception score?)

Dirk Werner Nowitzki. Greatest German ever.
