The Taliban is on Twitter?

By James Sheldon on May 12th, 2011

For real? For real.

The Guardian broke this story, and offered the first look at the Twitter page that is apparently the official social networking link to the Taliban. The Taliban.

Not only did The Guardian toss this to the public, but they state, on good authority, that it is legitimate.

Yes. I know what you’re thinking: Where’s the little blue seal of authenticity for Verified Twitter users. I think that only works for famous celebrities, opposed to infamous killers of infidels–infidels being you and I, according to…The Taliban.

Ever think that it’s weird that these people hate Americans so much and not Canadians? Probably not people from Hawaii or Alaska…but if you’re from Maryland–Infidel! I kid. They think we’re all infidels, Americans are just extra-infidely.

At the time of throwing down this post there were less than 300 followers of The Taliban on Twitter, but I have a strange feeling that their numbers will grow. No, not with followers who are interested in their ideals, but with people who will start to stir the proverbial pot.

I can see it now. Some American boy is going to fall in love with some Taliban girl living abroad, probably on New York City’s Upper West Side. They’re going to meet on Twitter, then decide to meet in person at a dance in a gym, fall in love in some cosmic, unforeseen and unexpected way…then a battle is going to ensue between local Taliban members and a mix of the lover boy’s friends… I’ve seen it a hundred times. It always ends badly.

Am I going to follow The Taliban on Twitter? I dunno. Are you? I’m kind of curious to take in their perspective. They’ll be bragging a lot about NATO forces dying, and possibly claiming that so and so served his/her jihadist purpose of blowing themselves up and taking others with them. Or perhaps, they’ll be more of the CNN-style Taliban feed, offering updates as necessary. I guess there’s only one way to find out.
