Hey, have you ever wanted to hear what a bad Justice rip-off mixed up with Nelly Furtado vocals and a pastiche of Bad Romance sounds like? Me neither.
But apparently the world does, as Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ has shot to the top of the charts, like ‘Born This Way’ before it, even though both are pretty lackluster as pop offerings and even more lackluster as something shooting for a wider range. If this is any indication of Gaga’s sophmore offering, she’s going to trip on her own ambition and try-hard. It’s not far-fetched with rumored song titles floating around like ‘Hooker on a Church Corner’, a title that’d go well alongside with ‘Seriously, Guyz, Pay Attention To Me’. Where ‘Born This Way’ sounded like a montage you’d put in Sex and the City 3, or similar pabulum that’d be playing during a makeover scene, Judas trips on its ambition – it sets out to be more than a song where you use the word ‘baby’ or ‘love’ eighty times – but winds up that way in the chorus.
Simply put, the song is awful. But fans don’t care, they’ll place merit on it because of the artist’s hype. So congratulations to Gaga’s team – you’re entering the same era Will Smith was in when he made Wild, Wild West.
