Do we need any more high-priced toys? G4 jets paired with expensive cars, million-dollar jewelry that nobody really wants, iPads lined with crystals – or do we want the nostalgia section of our brain to kick in and a giant sci-fi death machine roaming the streets.
My vote’s with the death machine. Clearly. The original Star Wars films housed some of the greatest animatronics, art direction, and concept art of any movie that had been made up to that point, turning models (not the runway kind) into beloved celebrities. The most beloved? The AT-AT.
Maybe it’s because it kinda looks like a household pet. Like a giant mechanical dog was going to crush the rebel resistance. Maybe it’s easy to anthropomorphize to make it hold onto our dreams and ideals but a far more likely reason for our fascination is just that we’re all straight-up nerds. Michael Koehler, a 38-year-old social media consultant has put forth a mandate for America to unite and boost our morale by contributing to a fund to build a life-sized, fully armed and operational AT-AT.
Soon, the details will be thrown up on a Kickstarter web site to secure funding, but think of all the nerdy women who will be powerless, baring their bosoms at anybody who drove this to ComicCon.
