A380 Collides With Delta Regional Jet at JFK (Watch)

By James Sheldon on April 12th, 2011

At 8:08 p.m. EDT Monday evening, the largest passenger jet ever created had a little run-in with a Comair/Delta Regional Jet at JFK International Airport in New York. Fortunately, someone was capturing the moment via mobile device, so we can all furrow our brows and gasp in an audible manner.

Most accidents in aircraft happen on the ground, as opposed to in the air–this serves as yet another example of the fine line that exists in air traffic safety when it comes to simple aircraft taxis. The Airbus A380 is a beast. A double decker boasting a wingspan of 261 feet–it only took a couple of those 261.6 feet to catch the much smaller regional jet and spin it a quarter-turn like a revolving door. The Delta pilot radioed immediately:

“Roll the emergency trucks at Mike. We’ve been hit by Air France.” “Mike” referencing the appropriate taxiway.

No passengers on either aircraft were injured, though I’m sure the folks on the CRJ had a better understanding of the power possessed in a slow rolling A380.

As you’ll see in the video, the pilot of the Air France A380 immediately stopped the aircraft. Damage to the left wing of the jumbo jet was significant. The larger aircraft basically cut a notch out of the tail section of the Delta jet. You can check out a few photos of the damage to both planes at NYC Aviation.
