Government Shutdown 2011: Closer to a Deal?

By James Sheldon on April 8th, 2011

The fact that I’m writing about this again within a 3 day span infuriates me. Perhaps that’s a bit of an overstatement–I just don’t care that much; however, it’s Friday. It should be a joyous day–a day of finding viral videos and sharing them with the masses, but you want to know about the government shut down. I hear your desire.

The good news: It seems that the democrats and republicans are closer to an agreement, regardless of the verbal slap fighting that is rolling out of both camps. Within both parties there are a few folks who are more interested in the greater good, and they’re selling out their party politics to let people know that the two sides are actually close to agreements on money. That having been said, there is no deal, but it’s still a possibility before midnight.

I think we can all agree that this issue isn’t really about money. It’s about ideology. Both sides agree that budget cuts need to be made in order for us to say that we’re really on the road to economic recovery, yet there are ideological issues within the realm of “hot topics” that are easy to spotlight and target for pulling funds: Planned Parenthood; National Endowment of the Arts–you’re picking up what I’m laying down.

The fact that some members of Congress think that American people would be OK with a government shutdown in an effort to “balance the federal budget,” just proves how out of touch this body of “representatives” in Washington is.

Listen up, Reps, the vast majority of We the People, want you to get a deal done. The vast majority. Continue the intramural fighting on your own time, and then you can focus on making additional ideological promises to your elite constituents–the folks who fund your campaigns–you know, the few you feel responsible to who aren’t lobbyists.

The fact remains, you’re on our time. We the People, are your employers. You work for us, and quite frankly, very few of you are working toward a satisfactory status. Get a deal done, yeah?

If they aren’t able to come to terms, we shouldn’t run into anything more than a few annoyances. Yes, over 800,000 federal employees will go on furlough, and military pay will be delayed…yes, Congress will still get paid, them being essential to eventually getting a deal done and all. Makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?
