We’re less than 48 hours from what is arguably the most popular and famous golf tournament of the year. The 2011 Masters will boast an elite field, including returning champion Phil Mickelson. The buzz will get underway tomorrow with the annual Par 3 competition, where the best of the of the best try to hole a short one, win a prize and a few pats on the back from their peers. If you’re interested in checking that out, ESPN will carry the coverage, or you can have a look at the Masters site.
The chatter is as it has been–all about Tiger Woods. Tiger has long said that he has been setting his sights on the 2011 Masters with a hope to see and feel everything click. Part of me thinks this is his attempt at remaining relevant in that chatter about the world’s top player, but if he comes out with guns blazing, the rest of the field will have their hands full. Regardless, the mystique is gone, so if Tiger hopes to win, he’s going to have to earn it.
The weather in Augusta is shaping up to be perfect throughout the week and weekend. The action will get started on Thursday morning and benefit from east coast daylight savings sunlight, which seems to linger well into the evening. Golf legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus will have the honors, taking the tee at 7:40 a.m. EDT on Thursday. Other notables teeing off early: Nick Watney, Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson–8:40 a.m. EDT; Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Rory McIroy–9:24 a.m. EDT.
Tiger Woods will play the first two rounds with Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby at 10:41 a.m. EDT.
ESPN will carry the coverage, including 3D coverage of all four rounds, and CBS will carry the coverage and their traditional golf whispers throughout the weekend.
