So when Johnny Depp finally decides to do a franchise, he really decides to do a franchise.
Pirates of the Carribean was one of the best movies of the oughties – an unexpected franchise that brought enough fun and revenue to Disney that they changed the original ride. Beloved in the hearts of teenagers everywhere, the movie featured a cast of the heartthrobs of the moment and was a revival of the swashbuckling genre that captivated moviegoers way back in the 40’s and 50’s. And was a massive, massive hit. Since then, they’ve made two more that were more stilted and wooden than Orlando Bloom’s expressions. And now a fourth one is coming, and Disney executives have already greenlit the script to the fifth based off of test screenings of the movie that will feature Johnny Depp alongside mermaid and Ian McShane.
I’d be fine with Pirates 5, and every Pirates movie following it if Ian McShane turned out to play random tertiary characters. Like, you’d blink and see Ian McShane’s head on a parrot, or Ian McShane randomly as an undead skeleton. Or Ian McShane as Al Swearengen. He’s enough of a tough customer to wrestle himself on a boat.
Pirates 4 comes out on May 20th.
