Swan Fight! Natalie Portman Accused Covering up Sarah Lane’s Role – Do you agree?

Have you watched Black Swan? The eerie and tres creepy portrayal of life as a ballerina is back in the news.  Star Natalie Portman is being accused of covering up the work of her body double Sarah Lane.

Sarah Lane claims that the public has been misled about the role Portman played in the movie. She states, “Of the full body shots, I would say 5% are Natalie.” Portman’s fiancé and choreographer of the film says that Lane’s work wasn’t as “Significant” as she claims. La Times quotes him as saying, ““There are articles now talking about her dance double [American Ballet Theatre dancer Sarah Lane] that are making it sound like [Lane] did a lot of the work, but really, she just did the footwork, and the fouettés, and one diagonal [phrase] in the studio,” he said. “Honestly, 85 percent of that movie is Natalie.”

In my opinion, if Lane was out to bash Portman she probably could have done it back during Oscar season, but instead the story is coming out now. This makes me think that it’s not meant to be as mean spirited as some are making it out to be – she wants credit where credit is due.

“They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar,” says Lane. “It is demeaning to the profession and not just to me. I’ve been doing this for 22 years…. Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?”

Lane insists that she has nothing against the actress personally even though Portman has never mentioned her name to the press and has downplayed her role. (Lane is credited as being a “Hand model”, “stunt double” and “Lady in the Lane”)

EW quotes:

“[Natalie] is an amazing actress, for sure,” she says. “I know that it’s not a personal thing against me. I know that it’s just a political thing. It’s just unfortunate that I kind of lost credit.”

  1. There is no doubt that Sarah Lane is just fighting for her work to be credited. Unfortunately, she’s screwed. By the time she really gets credit, it will be a footnote in Hollywood history. I just hope she got paid big on the front end. Reminds me of the screenplay for Good Will Hunting…all we heard was how Damon and Affleck were wonderboys… Cut to: William Goldman rewriting a bad action script next to a huge pile of cash.

  2. Didn’t every dancer learn the lesson from Flashdance? No filmmaker wants to spoil their illusion.

I guess having a dance background, it was easy for me to tell which shots were of Natalie and which weren’t.

In all dance aspects of the film, Sarah’s role was pivotal, but fact remains, a number of ballerinas could have done it, and that’s why they’re not mentioning her. Don’t know what she expects. I’m sure they ironed all of this out in the business details. No use in being naive to think that someone is going to praise you out of the goodness of their heart. It’s just not the MO of the business.

Same thing with Julia Stiles and Save the Last Dance… we all remember that pile, don’t we? You think she was dancing? Chryssie Whitehead, I believe was her dance double.

It’s the way it works. Sarah Lane is a ballet dancer in the world’s most prestigious company, if I were her I don’t think I would have ever mentioned anything publicly.

  3. The Oscar was for Portman’s acting, not her dancing. Lane’s comments are just sour grapes. Probably no more body double dance gigs for her.
