Have you watched Black Swan? The eerie and tres creepy portrayal of life as a ballerina is back in the news. Star Natalie Portman is being accused of covering up the work of her body double Sarah Lane.
Sarah Lane claims that the public has been misled about the role Portman played in the movie. She states, “Of the full body shots, I would say 5% are Natalie.” Portman’s fiancé and choreographer of the film says that Lane’s work wasn’t as “Significant” as she claims. La Times quotes him as saying, ““There are articles now talking about her dance double [American Ballet Theatre dancer Sarah Lane] that are making it sound like [Lane] did a lot of the work, but really, she just did the footwork, and the fouettés, and one diagonal [phrase] in the studio,” he said. “Honestly, 85 percent of that movie is Natalie.”
In my opinion, if Lane was out to bash Portman she probably could have done it back during Oscar season, but instead the story is coming out now. This makes me think that it’s not meant to be as mean spirited as some are making it out to be – she wants credit where credit is due.
“They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar,” says Lane. “It is demeaning to the profession and not just to me. I’ve been doing this for 22 years…. Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?”
Lane insists that she has nothing against the actress personally even though Portman has never mentioned her name to the press and has downplayed her role. (Lane is credited as being a “Hand model”, “stunt double” and “Lady in the Lane”)
“[Natalie] is an amazing actress, for sure,” she says. “I know that it’s not a personal thing against me. I know that it’s just a political thing. It’s just unfortunate that I kind of lost credit.”
