Tiki Barber is Giving up Retirement for Lent

By James Sheldon on March 9th, 2011

Tiki Barber. ‘Member him? Played RB for the NY Giants? Was highly critical of the organization, his QB, other players and coaches, then he retired…and the next year the Giants won the Super Bowl in one of the biggest upsets in NFL history? Yeah, that Tiki Barber–Ronde Barber’s twin brother.

He’s coming out of retirement. He’s 36–yet for being 36 he is a low mileage model. If you were to look at his NFL career, he was the most productive on the field pushing toward his retirement. 99.9 percent of running backs are generally relegated to 3rd down duty at that point. Regardless, Tiki started working out, found that much of his strength is where it once was, and he’s ready to get back on the field.

As of late, Tiki Barber has been in the news for a rash of negativity, including the fact that he bailed on his pregnant wife for a younger woman. No doubt, there are two sides to that story–we’ve just never been privy. He was a go-to for NBC news and sports for awhile, but then his personal laundry began to air. So, where else to go?

At this point, one thing is certain–he won’t be in uniform for the NY Giants. It could be a possibility that he could end up with twin brother Ronde in Tampa, but it’s looking more likely that he could become a fixture in Denver. Coach John Fox worked with Tiki on the Giants staff, and is in need of a quality, veteran minded running back as he attempts to rebuild the Broncos franchise.

Will Tiki actually see action on the field? Will anyone see action on an NFL field next season? Who’s to say? Based on the fact that Barber has always been a clean-livin’ type, his body should hold up well. The time off may have actually benefited him, especially if he’s just looking to pop out one or two more seasons.
