Mike Starr, Former In Alice In Chains Bassist, Dies

By Mark Lorenz on March 8th, 2011

Sad that it has happened, but not expected. Mike Starr, former Alice in Chains bassist and ‘Celebrity Rehab’ cast member has passed away at the age of 44. Still, too young.

Alice in Chains is as noted for the addictions of its members as it is for pioneering heavy-sludge grunge rock at the turn of the 90’s. The band was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987, and was one of the most successful acts of the 90’s, selling over 25 million albums off of the success of albums like ‘Facelift’, ‘Dirt’, and ‘Alice in Chains’. Starr was the bassist for a period of time but left the band directly after the success of ‘Dirt’. He never really recovered, as was revealed on Celebrity Rehab, started doing drugs with his dad and spiraled out of control.

Layne Staley, the lead singer of the band, died of a heroin overdose in 2002.

Police responded to a call on Tuesday of a possible death at a residence. The cause of death was not immediately available, but you can pretty much guess what caused it can’t you?

Protip: it was heroin. Don’t do drugs, kids. Even if you’re in a really good band, you won’t live forever, no matter what the opiate-induced goats you dream of tell you.

It is really sad. Mike Starr was a talented bassist still troubled by the death of his good friend, Layne. Alice in Chains is one of the best bands of my generation. Too bad such a waste of talent. We can only hope that Mike is now at peace.
