The Fennville Blackhawks were ecstatic after Wes Leonard secured the game-winning shot to cap out their perfect season but excitement quickly turned to fear and devastation after the 16-year-old collapsed on the court.
Emergency responders did their best to revive the young athlete but Wes Leonard was pronounced dead last night, shortly after he sunk the game-winning shot.
Wes will be remembered as an all-around great athlete (he played forward for the high school basketball team and quarterback for the football team) and a young kid who showed a very promising career as professional athlete.
On Tuesday, Leonard’s coach Ryan Kingler opened up to the Sentinel about just how dedicated Wes was to becoming a great athlete:
“That’s what makes him a little different. He takes care of his body better than probably anybody I’ve ever coached,” Klingler said. “Spends a lot of time on his own in the weight room. He’s a special kid.”
News of his death has hit the town hard and friends and family are devastated over the news.
No cause of death has been released at this time but hospital officials did say an autopsy would be performed this weekend.
