In one of the best ideas to ever come out of the American Idol camp, producers are now discussing the possibility of opening up AI to online voting. This has to happen. For a number of reasons.
First, that American Idol is declining in viewership, because people are starting to catch on that winning American Idol doesn’t necessarily make you a star. It does make you more of a fixture on the county fair circuit, so if you want to be singing your heart out to Sam Cooke tunes next to blue ribbon oxen, go for it. You can still be a star in the eyes of so many bored Midwesterners eyes, which might be part of the reason why country boys and Midwesterners keep winning the singing competition over actual talented people. Simon Fuller, creator of American Idol, has been pushing for an online voting system for a time now, and Nigel Lythgoe, who’s an executive producer, has leaked plans for implementation. Each fan will be able to vote 50 times online.
Which means we can expect the internet hate machine to take over and ensure the worst singer keeps getting passed forward. Or Howard Stern will somehow win. Which would only make it SLIGHTLY less legitimate.
