Accenture Match Play begins today.
For golf fans, Tiger Woods fans and Tiger Woods haters, this is the event that could arguably make or break Tiger’s attempt to step back to the forefront of the golf world…and save some PGA ratings. Yes, he’s still sitting near the top of the PGA rankings, yet he has lost his mystique. Players no longer fear him, and I would even go so far as to say that many players now hold a competitive contempt for him. Everyone wants to take their shot at slaying Goliath.
Since “the incident,” Tiger has struggled to regain his form. In truth, I don’t think he cares. He needs to make some serious money, because he now has an exceptional amount of money to deliver to his dependents. Tiger is well-aware that he has lost his edge. Did his sexual escapades, and life of secrecy fuel his proverbial fire? Or was their so much power in his own myth that he surfed across it like he was walking on water? I like the latter. Whatever it was, the passion is gone. The closest thing we’ve seen to the passion of the past was when he spit on a green just over a week ago.
Woods enters the Accenture Match Play tournament as a #1 seed, along with Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson. It’s an elite contest–only the top 64 in the world are invited. It will be interesting to see how Woods fares in the match play format. He has excelled in the past. If you’re really sick of still hearing about him now, just wait until he wins again…he did say his new swing “clicked” on the range this week.
