Regis Retiring?

By Mark Lorenz on January 18th, 2011

David Letterman’s endless treasure trove of material is now planning on being off the air – Regis Philbin is retiring, leaving a vacant spot in one of the highest-rated morning shows.

He’s been on the air longer than many people have been alive, speaking in short, excitable bursts, and possessing an accent that’s somewhere between New York and radio announcer from the 1950’s – and most everyone loves him. I mean, he’s Regis. He’s never offended anybody’s sensibilities and always been a presence for as long as you can remember. Who else could’ve hosted Who Wants To Be A Milllionare? Who else could’ve not laughed as contestants struggled with even the most basest of questions. Only Philbin. Only Regis Philbin.

Philbin – he’s 79 years young, in case you were wondering – is stepping down from his hosting duties at the end of this summer, though a specific date hasn’t been given yet. His career started in 1983 with a local New York TV program called ‘The Morning Show’ which then morphed into ‘Live With Regis And Kathie Lee’ in ’88, and Live with Regis and Kelly in the mid-2000’s. A long, long string of history.

It’s amazing to think what Regis has seen sitting in his chairs. His many, many chairs.

So Kelly starting working with Regis at 18, in 1988? I did not know that....

No, you misread that. It says Kathy Lee was with him in 1988, NOT Kelly Ripa, she has been with him for 10 years.
