Golden Globes Draws Great Ratings

Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011If the Golden Globes was hoping for controversy to draw in ratings, boy did they cash in last night.

If you missed it, Ricky Gervais basically took it upon himself to raze the egos of everyone who gathered in the dining room of the Beverly Hills Hilton. Making fun of everyone from the closeted Tom Cruise and John Travolta, the HFPA taking bribes, airbrushing on the Sex and the City posters, Robert Downey Jr.’s stay in rehab, Steve Carell leaving The Office, the Golden Globes’ president, Hugh Hefner (randomly), and managed to draw the ire of everyone from Tom Hanks to Judd Apatow, who later talked about Ricky Gervais was lazy for just being mean and not incorporating more humor in the telecast.

The HFPA’s president has already said that Gervais will not be invited back to host again, predictably. But he managed to snag 17 million viewers, a total that has beat everything else in a similar timeslot. And was the most-watched prime-time entertainment telecast since last year’s Golden Globes.

So they got what they wanted. A firestorm, and people are actually talking about the lamest awards ceremony in Hollywood next to the People’s Choice Awards.

Good on ya, Gervais.
