The dude is quick. He was considered to be the “supplement” to the Patriots high-powered offense for a couple years before fans and pundits quickly realized: This guy is the real deal. You may not even notice the guy pre-snap, but if you’re a defender, and Tom Brady is forced to check down, you better find #83 quickly.
I thought Welker’s quickness might have been reserved for the field, but then I enjoyed the transcript of his sit-down with the media yesterday.
Everyone knows how the Patriots deal with the media. They don’t. They generally keep to themselves, only comment on themselves and stay away from the drama and bulletin board material offered by other teams. Yesterday, Wes Welker fielded all his questions, and answered them in a pattern of theme and variation.
The theme was feet. The variation was of feet, steps, toes–you name it. In an interview session (including questions) that lasted less than 10 minutes, Welker dropped 10 references to feet: Tom Brady will always put his best foot forward…you can’t simply dip your toe in the water…Darrelle Revis has great feet.”…We’re out there being good little foot soldiers…”
If you’re unaware, Rex loves his little lady’s feet. So much so, they role-play and video tape it. We all know this because one of the videos was “leaked.”
I think this is huge. Rex Ryan is always trying to get into the heads of his opponents with his circus-clown media antics, but if you’re an opponent, you know he never strikes hard. He tries to be cute. Funny. And he tries too hard. But he continues to jab–at players, coaches and franchises.
It looks as if Wes Welker has caught him with the unsuspecting hook, because not only did he take on Rex, but he caught Ryan’s wife Michelle with a glancing blow. Now them’s some fightin’ words.
