The James Bond franchise was on the precipice of death, ironically close to 2012. And if the world can’t have the icon of manliness that is James Bond, I’m comfortable with being hit by a comet. Because nobody would be able to prevent that comet from hitting us.
MGM has been operating in the red for a number of years, despite being the film studio most responsible for Hollywood’s Golden Age of Cinema. They’ve gone from that to owning only two properties that are profitable – James Bond and The Lord of the Rings, so wrangling over James Bond 23 and The Hobbit has basically reflected a Bondian struggle with studio executives trying desperately to raise enough money for the movie while stroking their hairless cats.
But thankfully, they’ve managed to find the funding to pay Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, and Bond 23 is getting the go-ahead, along with a videogame adaptation of the same movie. Craig will be seen most recently in the big-screen clusterhump that is ‘Cowboys and Aliens’, while Sam Mendes spent his downtime directing the Broadway version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Think of how terrible it would be if we lost James Bond. There’d be nothing to watch on Spike TV.
