Xbox’s Kinect is one of the hottest toys on the market right now – and with good reason. It recognizes your body, where you move, how you stand – without murdering you like any other robot would mercilessly if it had a read-out of your body and house.
Microsoft’s Kinect has been one of the most successful accessories for the company, shipping over 8 million units to a hungry consumer base that wants to wave their hands and kick their feet and watch their avatars do things on screen. But a new technological advancement, unveiled as CES, will let them do more than that. The sensor will be able to read your facial expressions. So it’ll know when you’re mad at it, and probably react accordingly, making its reaction times slower, sad noises, and be all passive aggressive. You’ll pick Netflix, and it’ll make slightly cutting comments during your viewing of Nip/Tuck. Like, ‘Oh, this isn’t Ryan Murphy’s best work. I like Glee better.’
Realistically, there’s no way that it’ll be able to detect all of your facial expressions. Unless you only make three like the victim of a surgery gone wrong. But you have to admit, that’s an impressive re-creation of Steve Ballmer.
