Breaking: Americans admire wealthy people. They admire wealthy people more than philanthropists, people trying to promote world peace, and probably their own family members.
In a recent USA Today/Gallup pole, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ranked higher than the Dalai Lama, Pope Benedict XVI, Glenn Beck, and Reverend Billy Graham in a list of people that Americans admire the most. Which makes total sense, because Benedict is a divisive figure, Glenn Beck is a charlatan weirdo, and a lot of people don’t know the Dalai Lama outside of his vague interactions with Hollywood celebrities. Bill Gates is a safe choice. The man founded one of the most universally used computer systems, who doesn’t think that’s admirable?
The most admired man, however, was Barack Obama. Despite all hemming and hawing that his presidency is a failure and that his approval rating is plummeting. The most admired woman turned out to be Hilary Clinton – and lingering around the top was Nelson Mandela, because that dude is amazing. Seriously. Not one person in history has hated Nelson Mandela.
Unless they looooooved apartheid. You never know. There are a few people out there, floating around, probably trying to be ironic.
But nobody loved apartheid.
