Tron Opens Big(ish); Nobody Likes Romantic Comedies

By Mark Lorenz on December 20th, 2010

Have you ever paid 120 million dollars in investment money for something that only recouped 7 million back? Of course you have. Because nearly everyone reading this is broke and sleeping at a public library.

And not working in Hollywood. This weekend was a clusterfuck, and the strongest evidence that Hollywood needs to get their accounting and expenses in order, as a movie that cost 170 million dollars – Tron —  with another 100 marketing made just over 40 million, and a movie that cost 120 million dollars made a grand total of seven. Seven. That movie in question is the romantic comedy How Do You Know? – whose price tag has to be a result of the combined wattage of Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson, and Owen Wilson.

But the only time a romantic comedy should cost 120 million is if it features original footage of Jesus of Nazareth. That’s about it. If the DVD box can turn water into wine, I can understand – otherwise there’s nothing that 12 million dollars wouldn’t be able to express, unless they had to set the city of Hong Kong on fire.

Yogi Bear opened second. Of course it did. Thank you, America. We can always rely on you to support talking animals, no matter how terrible the milieu.
