It’s a sad day. One of mainstream television’s mainstream fixtures has hung up his trousers, divorced another wife, and signed off gracefully. Larry King has ended his show, to the tune of 2 million viewers.
For those of you who were fans of Larry King, you’ll appreciate the man’s constant inquisitive nature, his unconventional sense of dress, and the fact that he was a constant. He was the Cal Ripken of interviewing famous people. He was the Brett Favre of sitting behind a microphone – and a fixture of a news station that has suffered yo-yo’s in viewership and leadership. He was always sitting there. Just sitting there. Occasionally hunched over. Occasionally gruff. Forever asking. Larry King was the king of the question.
Piers Morgan will be taking over his slot in January, and King will be on and off television for as long as his health permits – but what a send off it was. Arnold Schwarzenneger took time off of watching California burn slowly to declare it Larry King Day. Fred Armisen appeared, doling out impressions, and Tony Bennett sang.
All in all, it was way more entertaining than Larry King’s interview with Jon Gosselin. Which is either high praise or a terrible insult.
Larry King, your bow tie and eloquence will be missed. And I will look for you every time I pass a bridge and am unsure about what lurks underneath it.
