Miramax Sequels On The Way

By Mark Lorenz on December 16th, 2010

Have you ever wondered what sort of financial state the Weinstein Company is in? Wonder no more – the film company is planning sequels to some of their most popular film franchises in the mid-nineties.

Only now, it’s 2010, so the move has to be purely financial. The Weinstein brothers, Harvey and Bob, took Miramax from a tiny independent film studio to one of the biggest powerhouses conceivable – with their slate of movies beating out traditional Hollywood juggernauts directed by Steven Speilberg. They found Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith out in s a sea of amateur filmmakers and promoted them to the talent that they’ve become – but they’ve fallen on hard times since they’ve left Disney and a number of their productions didn’t do as well as they expected. So now sequels have been ordered for Shakespeare In Love, Rounders, and Bridget Jones’ Diary, in a massive deal pairing the Weinstein company back with Disney.

You might wonder how you make a sequel to a movie like Shakespeare In Love or Rounders – but that’s going to be up to the geniuses that they hire and torment with nearly impossible screenwriting tasks.

It won’t be you. You’ll just be able to enjoy the cheesy side of Matt Damon competing in the World Series of Poker.
