The Tourist Bombs

By Mark Lorenz on December 13th, 2010

Over the weekend, we got a reminder that the era of big box-office stars is pretty much ended. You can put two of the world’s biggest draws in a movie — people won’t necessarily see it.

Especially when Johnny Depp doesn’t have any quirkiness to hide behind and Angelina Jolie is trying her best to pretend like she’s capable of kicking people’s asses. Especially when the script is written in a dry and humorless fashion that appeals only to people who enjoy vanity projects. But this isn’t just a one-time trend – major releases this year with big stars have opened far underneath the expectations big studios have placed on them. Did anybody see Knight and Day? Nobody saw Knight and Day. Big stars aren’t what  brings in the big bucks anymore – now it’s big franchises.

Anyway, the 100+ million dollar production managed to bring in 17 million on opening weekend. Contrast that with the production of Black Swan that managed to score 3.3 million dollars opening in just 90 screens.

Which would you rather see, Johnny Depp trying hard to play normal or aggressive lesbian sex with Natalie Portman? There’s no answer to this question that doesn’t lead to Portman. Watch Portman. You won’t regret it. How could you?
