We are truly on stranger tides.
If you’re like a billion other people on the face of the planet, possessed by hype-driven films that have become unexpected franchises, today will thrill you. The new Pirates of the Carribean trailer is out.
Pirates of the Carribean went from a project at Disney just based off of one of their most popular rides to an international franchise that has survived for nearly a decade. Which in turn made Disney change their ride to reflect said franchise. It’s commerce influencing art influencing commerce again. But the last movie was one of the worst pieces of clusterfuck ever put to celluloid – with a mash-up of Keith Richards, a voting council with arbitrary rules, and Orlando Bloom dying. We’re all a fan of dead Orlando Bloom, but not franchises that stretch themselves thin.
Which is why Disney has done the smart thing and picked up a handful of world class actors to supplement the project – including Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz.
And it doesn’t look that bad. It even looks workable – and with Bruckheimer’s team behind it, it will at least be incredibly watchable.
It may not make the most sense, but it will at least be watchable. With explosions. And swashbuckling.
