Ricky Gervais Scores Globes Hosting Slot

By Mark Lorenz on December 3rd, 2010

Ricky Gervais is one of the smartest, most consistent men working in Hollywood. When he works. He doesn’t really need to after creating The Office and Extras – he could basically sit in a recording booth and cackle – which he does from time to time in podcasts.

But despite the occasional rough patch hosting last year, overall his performance at the Golden Globes was good enough to have the producers invite him back. As he’ll be hopefully handing out awards to films that aren’t as terrible as Avatar. Seriously? Avatar won best picture? What movie were you actually watching, critics and Hollywood Foreign Press? I think you were dosing and completely forgot you were being entranced by reruns of the Smurfs, instead of the tale of the Na’vi and unobtanium and riffraff and hooah.

Gervais courted controversy last year when he made fun of Mel Gibson’s recent problems drinking and trying to eliminate the Jews – in addition to critics penning the criticism that he was slightly more caustic than necessary.

You know who needs to be talked truthfully to? Hollywood stars. There’s nobody actually ribbing them without healthy doses of cue laughter and a tinge of fear that jobs will be lost.

Keep it coming, Ricky.
