If you were one of the millions of people around the world who are charmed by the game of football, excitement, confusion, and resentment undoubtedly were all emotions that you felt. Simultaneously.
The FIFA governing body has announced host countries for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. And boy did they pick some winners. For 2018 Russia will host the world’s most popular sporting event — but in 2022, that distinction goes to the tiny Middle Eastern country of Qatar. What do you know about Qatar? Well, judging from Google’s indexed searches – nobody in America knows about Qatar. Everybody in America is trying to find out where Qatar is and what it’s like.
Unless they’re proficient in Middle East studies or counterterrorism policy.
Well, for those of you wondering, Qatar has no great football/soccer tradition, is about the size of Connecticut, has one airport, and is almost entirely funded by oil/money in energy. It was up against Dallas, which still has some of the most dedicated and craziest sports fans in the entire world – and it won. You know what that means?
Texans are going to hunt you down, Qatar. It’ll be reminiscent of the last eight years of government – only related to sports.
But congratulations to Qatar. Enjoy the year where your tourism board won’t actually have to work their fingers to the bone.
