Welcome back to the working reality, America.
While we were all flying, driving and snoozing in a leftover coma yesterday, Andre Johnson boldly proclaimed, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it any more!”
Fair enough. He didn’t say that. But he did put the beginnings of a whoopin’ on the Tennessee Titans’ Cortland Finnegan in Houston yesterday.
If you know football, you know Andre Johnson as a no nonsense, superior athlete and wide receiver, who has had no instances of fighting or poor sportsmanship on or off the field. In fact, you could probably say that about a lot of players–until they stand across from Cortland Finnegan.
Growing up playing some corner back, I can appreciate Cortland Finnegan as an undersized, very physical corner who finds ways to get the job done, however, he gets things done because he’s a punk. He has a tendency to use his 5-yard contact zone to institute frequently illegality according to the rules of football. In fact, Finnegan has been fined three times already season–it’s his M.O. He kept jamming Andre Johnson on his release, but not to Johnson’s body, illegally to his face. Johnson decided enough was enough.
While I hate to see this, I loved seeing this vs. Finnegan. It has been a long time coming. As “big” and tough as he may have acted, he was fortunate that the referees stepped in after the helmets came off and Andre Johnson began to efficiently put the smack down. I was curious why his Tennessee teammates weren’t running in to break it up? Perhaps they have more respect for the Houston wide receiver than they do the thorn in their side on the defensive side of the ball.
Both players have been fined, but neither suspended. Personally I think that Finnegan should sit for multiple games, considering his role as an instigator in the past. All you have to do is watch him on game film if you’re the Commish. Hear that Goodell? Regardless, if their game on Dec. 19th has no playoff implications, I’ll certainly still be watching.
