Retail parasite Hot Topic was taken behind the proverbial woodshed yesterday evening for a licking they will not soon forget. In an attempt to cash in on a popular internet meme the clothing retailer started selling t-shirts with the crudely drawn “Rage Guy.”
KnowYourMeMe describes Rage Guy as: “A 4chan meme that became popular in late 2008, the “fffuuuuu” Rageguy is an ‘exploitable’ 4pane image macro in which the main character expresses serious disappointment/exasperation/displeasure with a given scenario (typically caused on accident)”
Well not one to take this fleecing of culture laying down, the folks at 4chan decided to fight back by changing the meaning of “Rage Guy” to “Race Guy” where he now expresses rage over racially charged scenarios. The result was that within a day Hot Topic was forced to discontinue the shirts due to numerous complaints that they would sell a product that promotes racism.
The rebanding worked and Hot Topic was forced to release the following statement via its facebook page:
Maybe it’s not the most appropriate way to get a product pulled, but it certainly worked.
