They’re making another Great Gatsby movie. Entourage has come to life, and it’s going to be starring Leonardo DiCaprio’s posse.
Hollywood, you’ve gone from weirdly lazy to just copying off of parodies of yourself. It’s come full-circle. It’d be like if Weird Al suddenly decided to stop singing clones of popular songs and decided to start writing them. I had a middle-school teacher who spent the majority of our units discussing F. Scott Fitzgerald trashing the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford in angry diatribes. Where he’d get wheezy — remind us that there’s a level of emotion present in literature that couldn’t be duplicated in film – and then nearly pass out. It made junior year a lot more interesting.
What’s more interesting? That Baz Luhrmann is going to direct the next film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Fresh off the heels of his immense disaster pic, Australia, he’s going to go on to adapt one of the greatest novels of American literature.
And it will star Tobey Maguire. So you can look forward to Baz Luhrmann directing Spiderman and Leo DiCaprio in Oscar montages, or bombastic shots of rich people partying.
Like they did for years with David Blaine.
