It’s true. In New York, of all places. The concrete jungle where dreams are made of. And nerds clutch their inhalers and clap with delight.
The last installment of the Harry Potter film franchise is coming out this month, and then next summer – the franchise which has been one of the highest-grossing worldwide of all time. Literally making billions and billions of dollars. On top of the millions the books have already brought in. Harry Potter is basically a money-generating machine – but what else has it generated? Sporting competitions from America’s most prestigious universities. Sporting competitions that could also be viewed as a potential epic comedy. Like Quidditch.
Quidditch is a fictional game in the Potterverse, where teams ride broomsticks and try to throw a ball through a goal – the fact which is complicated by a golden snitch which is released and can win the match if caught.
There are bunches of other aspects to the game that I’m neglecting, but the Quidditch World Cup is coming to New York this weekend. Which means if you want, you can watch the giantest nerd convention this side of San Diego assemble to play a fictional game.
Which includes Harvard, Yale, Middlebury, Syracuse, Vassar, NYU, and just watch the video. Seriously.
