If there’s one thing we love in Chicago, it’s stories about serial killers. And beer. Tons and tons of beer – also, awful sports teams. And in the most fortunate situations, the two intermingle. Giving us books like The Devil In The White City.
For those of you who are unaware of who the ‘Devil In The White City’ is, it’s not perennial Mormon favorite Mitt Romney. Reputed to throw incredibly wild parties where no man can escape vice and temptation – but Dr. HH Holmes, who is believed to be America’s first serial killer. What a weird title to hold onto. That’s one you’ll never be able to get away from. The title America’s most interesting serial killer belongs to fictional character Dexter, but you’ll always remember your first. HH Holmes opened up a hotel in Chicago, the World’s Fair Hotel, in 1893 while the World’s Fair was going underway. It was there that he lured and murdered reportedly hundreds of women.
The most interesting part about the story is how Hollywood handled it. Tom Cruise purchased the rights originally, with the intent of playing the serial killer himself. That’s right. Tom Cruise murdering women. I wonder who talked him out of doing that? DiCaprio started a project based off of public-based source material, and Cruise eventually lost interest.
So now DiCaprio will kill everyone. On film. Enjoy.
