We only have heard about Tea Party rallies with record attendances, legions of scooter-bound white people who have their guts hanging over the side of their vehicles. We have heard of Glenn Beck rallies, where doughy middle-aged men go onstage to simulate tears, because that works.
One thing we haven’t heard about? How awesome large groups of sane people are when they get together. And how many people they can assemble. Initial estimates of the rally put the figure at well over 200,000 – officially around 215,000. The mass of people were so sane that public transportation in certain spots were shut down. The event was watched by over 2 million people on Comedy Central. Meaning that Comedy Central has gone from a network that aired shows like Crank Yankers to a show that showcases the best in real journalism – scathing attacks on other networks. It’s gone mainstream. HOORAY.
The rally had a variety of speakers, but the most notable was Cat Stevens mixing in with Ozzy Osbourne. And TI couldn’t be there, for obvious reasons.
You can find reruns of the rally on Comedy Central. They’ll probably be airing them for the next four months. At least.
But kudos to anyone smashing the attendance standards set by Tea Partyiers. And for probably havin waaaay more sex.
