Is the PlayStation phone worth getting excited about?

By David Woods on October 27th, 2010

For years, there have been rumors that Sony would develop and market a phone. Based on photos that leaked to the tech blog Engadget yesterday, it looks as if the PlayStation phone may finally be a reality.

The question is this: will anyone care? A PlayStation phone might have had a chance to compete in the pre-iPhone days. Before Apple took command of the gaming-on-a-phone market, a PlayStation phone that allowed its users to communicate with their friends and play games might have been a huge success. In today’s world, such a phone is more than likely dead on arrival.

Gamers who aren’t satisfied with the mobile gaming experience they get on their phones probably already own a PSP or a Nintendo DS. Why would they buy a new product that offers nothing they don’t already have the ability to do?

If you’re still interested in the idea of a PlayStation phone, here’s a quick rundown of how it’s expected to wok. The phone will run Android 3.0. It will have a custom games marketplace that will allow you to download games. There isn’t expected to be a Memory Stick slot, but there will probably be support for a microSD card.

The PlayStation phone is expected to hit shelves in 2011.
