Paul the Octopus Dead

By Heather B on October 26th, 2010

Paul the Octopus DeadPaul, the world famous ‘psychic’ octopus who flawlessly predicted the outcomes of this year’s World Cup matches died peacefully in his sleep, his German aquarium confirmed today.

Paul correctly forecasted the results of 8 World Cup games he was asked to predict, including Spain’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands.

Watched by a crowd of reporters, two boxes were lowered into Paul’s tank – each containing a small morsel of food, and marked with a flag of one of the competing teams.  Whichever box Paul opened to eat the food was interpreted as his prediction of the team that would be victorious.

“His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself,” Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll said in a statement [via Yahoo.com].  “We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed.”

Within an hour of his death, there were more than 150 messages of condolences on Paul’s official Facebook page.

Paul’s aquarium is currently working out the best way to mark his passing.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine,” Porwoll said.  “While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.”

I bet it was the Germans. Poor Spanish they lost the best friend their football team had.
