Kanye West is coming out with a new album, so he’s created a 30+ minute preview music video to promote it. Why? Why not? He’s Kanye West. His teeth are made of diamonds!
If you’ve got over 30 minutes to kill, watch Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ video below. (Or just let it play in the background and listen to the music. It’s seriously awesome.)
Runaway is overrun with imagery – but what does it all mean? MTV interviewed Jacqueline Cruz, a Culture and Media Studies major who focuses on music, and even she admits that the video is a lot to take in.
“It’s very expressive… It showcases Kanye as an artist, addressing contemporary issues, like race and the different roles played in society,” Jacqueline says, singling out the lengthy dinner sequence in the video as an example. (In the video, Kanye’s dinner guests are all African-Americans, and the servants are Caucasian.)
Of course there’s also the matter of the phoenix herself, who plays into the larger theme of man versus nature, but also represents Kanye’s return to the spotlight. “She embraces nature and in a sense, we’re ignoring it… She’s not really who she is,” Jacqueline said. “[And] it relates to [West’s] previous incidents, of him being burned in the media and him having to lose his dignity and his ego for him to represent what he really is as an artist, and I think that’s a really strong statement.”
