Today is a day that has been a long time coming. A day that will live in history and infamy. A day that will make all of us realize how old we are – the 25th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Many hours have been spent, primitive controller in hand, getting rash from the buttons – all around the world. The NES revolutionized videogames as we know it – and still has some of the most entertaining games found on any system. Seriously, have you played Barbie? She has to collect Z’s to stay asleep in her dream world – ostensibly because she’s trapped in a place that’s actually terrible beyond belief. Or World Cup? It has the same looping music until the end of time, and soccer players get to literally kill each other.
But without the NES, we wouldn’t be waving our arms at a television screen, blessed with Wii’s, or legions of characters that are very dressable as cosplay. We also probably wouldn’t have eradicated polio – the process of which is probably an obscure Nintendo game. The system lasted 10 years in the marketplace, a remarkable feat considering how often videogame systems are replaced in an increasingly competitive tech market.
Most importantly — they have videogames based off of the Bible. The Bible. That’s how wide-reaching Nintendo’s influence was. Now if you excuse me, I have to drown the baby Moses.
