University of Texas Shooting

By James Sheldon on September 28th, 2010

We act like it’s a sign of the times, but this type of thing has been going on for decades. We just never had the capability to cover it nationally. It’s disheartening to hear of it every time.

Especially when a campus riddled with one of the most infamous school shootings in American history–that event took place in 1966 when Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the university tower, setting up as a sniper and killing 14–is now on lock down due to another incident of violence over 40 years later.

Today, the University of Texas experienced another shooting on campus when a masked assailant entered a university library, fired several shots and then took his own life.

The school immediately cancelled classes and put the campus on lockdown, as authorities searched for what they believe might be a second suspect. Here’s to hoping that if there was another, he somehow came to his senses before going through with any scheme.

The gunman, who was sighted by several students before entering the Perry Castaneda Library, was wearing a suit along with the mask and toting an AK-47–a military grade assault rifle.

Police have not yet identified the gunman, and they haven’t released any information leading one to believe that it might be a student. At this hour, the campus remains on lock down, and several buildings are being searched for any potential explosives or evidence leading to more understanding, including a motive.

The good in all this bad–aside from the assailant, no one else was killed.
