Greg Giraldo is one of the funniest and consistently good comics working the stand-up circuit. Which makes it a tragedy that he accidentally overdosed over the weekend.
No comic has had an intrinsically easy, and happy life. People who do never develop senses of humor. There’s a lot of pain behind comedy, and Giraldo’s often was referenced in his stand-up act – honed with years on the road, stints on every Comedy Central panel show ripping off every European-styled panel show, and eventually winding up as a judge on Last Comic Standing. His stand-up style was crafted from his years as a law student at Columbia and Harvard – the man is no dummy. He also did a professional stint as a lawyer in the real world.
But he has demons. Giraldo’s drug use has been mentioned numerous times – by himself and on the Stern show – and on Saturday night, he overdosed on prescription pills at a hotel in New Jersey, and is currently in critical condition.
Giraldo has a sprite and able comic mind, and is immensely talented – from the headline it looks like he just had too much of a wild party and chased with a few too many pills.
His friends are twittering to pray for him. Which he’d no doubt rant about. Keep him and his family in your thoughts.
