Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin is apparently is stable condition a day after he was hit in the chest with a piece of a shattered bat.
MLB.com has the video here. (It’s not that gruesome, so you don’t need to worry about watching it if you have a weak stomach.)
What initially looked like a pretty routine broken bat play turned out to be much more serious. Colvin was on third base when Welington Castillo shattered his bat on a hit to left field. A sharp piece of the bat struck Colvin in the chest. Colvin was able to run home and at first he appeared to be fine, but he left the game for treatment.
It was then discovered that the bat had punctured his chest. There apparently wasn’t much external bleeding, but there were concerns that he could suffer from a collapsed lung, so he was sent to hospital. Reportedly, the bat struck him very close to his heart and the outcome could have been much worse.
Colvin is currently in the hospital and is expected to remain there for a few more days. He won’t play for the Cubs again this season.
