Joaquin Phoenix is a man of mystery. He’s a man who has layers to his celebrity. A man who isn’t just another Hollywood celebrity growing a beard and gallivanting around town.
Or maybe he is. Because after spending a year with Casey Affleck filming his supposedly crazy life, it’s been let slip that the documentary about Joaquin’s lost year is fake. Fake. Disingenuous. It literally is just a documentary of two rich guys running around filming someone who is supposed to be a crazy – when he’s not actually crazy, just incredibly incredibly bored. You know what is real, though? The lawsuits people filed against the pair for sexually harassing the crew, just because.
If there’s one thing that I can’t stand, it’s rich people slumming it because they think there’s more intrinsic value or meaning in it. If there’s two things I can’t stand, it’s beards. Combine the two, and you have a nightmare of a film, made to stroke the egos of celebrities who can’t stand the media’s cycle and don’t understand it.
It’s the media. They don’t really care if a celebrity is losing their mind, they’ve seen it happen hundreds of times before. It’s not their job to step in and save people.
Or care if you get pooped on.
