There’s not too much in the world that’s actually shocking. We’ve been inundated with images of gingerbread men flicking people off, Marilyn Manson consuming cats, and deaths every night on the news.
What’s actually shocking? That a musical based off of making fun of a religion is headed to Broadway. Less shocking is that it’s from the brilliant and twisted minds of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. For years, Trey Parker has talked about writing a musical based off of Mormonism, because the story of the religion’s origin is too ridiculous to ignore. But it’s not too ridiculous for Broadway, who have hosted the stories of pirate queens, the psychotic stage moms of strippers, the French Revolution, and an imaginary town where everyone has to pay to use the bathroom.
Mormonism isn’t that far off. Stone and Parker have paired with the co-writer of Avenue Q, Robert Lopez, and have handed it off to some of the biggest names current stalking the Great White Way’s stages – notably Cheyenne Jackson.
The Book Of Mormon begins previews at Broadway’s Eugene O’ Neill Theater on February 24th, and will probably open March 24th of next year.
Personally, Stone and Parker can do no wrong. They turn out quality entertainment, and they’d literally have to fart on a typewriter to get a worse script than Shrek: The Musical.
