Shannon Sharpe ‘Steps Aside’ From NFL Hosting Duties Amidst Legal Troubles

By Heather B on September 15th, 2010

Shannon SharpeShannon Sharpe, CBS sports analyst and former NFL tight end has decided to “step aside” from his broadcasting duties after unsettling allegations were brought against him by a woman thought to be his girlfriend, Michele Bundy.

Sports By Brooks has the legal documents, which reveal that Michele claims through her lawyer that Shannon “forced [her] to have sex with him,” “threatens her life” and “places her under surveillance and calls to say he is watching her.”

A hearing has been scheduled for the case at Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta, on Monday.  To date, Shannon has not been charged with a crime or been arrested.

The former football great appeared on CBS Sunday for his regular hosting duties, and did not comment about the case.  (The restraining order was granted the Friday prior to Sunday’s broadcast.)

The New York Post reports that 10 civil complaints have been filed against Shannon since 1994 – all by women – including a battery charge by the mother of one of his children.  However after mediation, that charge was dropped.

Based on the seriousness of the allegations against him, Sports By Brooks writes that both Shannon and CBS have done the right thing in allowing the legal process to run its course.  CBS Sports Senior Vice President of Communications spoke about Shannon’s decision on behalf of the network, saying “We accept Shannon’s decision and decline to comment further on a pending legal matter.”
