Kanye West New Song: Runaway (Listen!)

By Heather B on September 13th, 2010

Kanye West Runaway VMAs 2010Kanye West used the MTV Video Music Awards, and the buzz about a possible duet with Taylor Swift as a way to move past last year’s controversy and showcase a new song.

Actually, both artists debuted songs rumored to be about the 2009 award show’s now infamous incident – though the two did not appear on stage together.

Taking to the stage in a red suit and gold chains, Kanye punched out a few notes from his new song, Runaway.

“I always find something wrong / You been putting up with my sh—way too long” he rhymed, dedicating his performance to his late mother.

“Let’s have a toast for the douche bags / Let’s have a toast for the a—holes / Let’s have a toast for the scumbags,” West sang.  “I got a plan / Run away as fast as you can.”

MTV called the performance “a major turning point” in Kanye’s career.  Over the last year, the rapper spent his time dealing with the downturn of his public persona, even retreating from the spotlight for a time.

This year however, he was the only performer to receive a standing ovation for their performance.
